Ask the Architect at the Harrogate Homebuilding and Renovation Show – “architectural speed dating”

A fantastic atmosphere at ‘Ask the Architect’ at the Harrogate Homebuilding and Renovation Show where I was giving consultations on the RIBA sponsored stand.  There was a long queue of customers with all manner of questions.

It was a fun packed three hour morning session with quick introductions, rapid analysis from peoples’ photos, plans, approvals, ideas, own sketches, my succinct answers with brief sketches /solutions/ideas and feedback.

I managed to get through 11 sessions for sites in Stockton, Knaresborough, Rochdale, Skipton, Huddersfield, Derbyshire, Tamworth, Warwickshire about extending houses (all shapes and sizes), demolition and rebuilding with replacement, improving energy efficiency, how to address builder tenders coming in over budget, drawing 3D sketches so people could see what their 2D design plans would look like when built, customers checking that their designs made the most of the space they had before building, plans approved by the local council without any windows to bedrooms.

I think all the people managed to hear something not explained to them before about their projects in a straightforward manner.  It was a delight to help and it felt a little like architectural speed dating!
