Solar panels help to improve the energy efficiency of this detached house

Solar panels help to improve the energy efficiency of this detached house

Brief: The client needed planning advice for roof tile replacement with solar panels for hot water generation.  They needed to improve the thermal performance of their house located in a conservation area near Skipton.  The client’s had received a planning refusal notice for an earlier submission.

Solution: R Dawson Architect was appointed to provide advice about a planning re-submission.  The original application had provided information that had been of insufficient quality and inaccurate.  After re-measuring the house, plans and elevations were produced to show a re-roof and an integrated solar thermal heating system, occupying a smaller roof area.

Planning approval was granted by Craven District Council as the proposal was in line with policy and was a better solution.  As the house was built in 1970’s, measures were proposed to increase the insulation levels within the house for the floors, walls and ceiling whilst maintaining adequate ventilation levels.  Adjustments were made over the utility room at first floor to locate the thermal store tank for the hot water.  The client has managed to reduce substantially his household bills
